Toronto Ice Storm Inspires Chestnuts Roasting – Hip Hop

It was a dark and stormy night, rain kept falling and turning to glass, the blue lightening looked really cool .. or was that power line transformers blowing?

Inspired by necessity, being that the Toronto ice storm knocked out our power for 46 hours, -15C or whatever degree temperatures plus wind chill outside, thermometer dropping to 11C inside, getting bored now.. waiting.. and it’s Christmas?!

toronto ice stormHow about figuring out the chord changes to a Christmas classic “Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire”.

Chestnuts does have some really great chord changes and 46 hours was just about the right amount of time in between sleeping to keep warm to figure out all the changes with some added substitutions.

Recorded in Garage Band with stock kit loops, and live guitar tracks using a Peavey HP CT Special  .. yeah, this guitar does more than shred.

Amp set to Clean Combo with no verb.

Reverb added to master track only.

Live guitar via M-Audio interface.

Stock R&B drum loop set to Hip-Hop tones.

Guitar lines including midway solo were single take after working through changes and locating some cool passing tones.

Here’s my take on a Christmas classic Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire written in 1944 by Mel Torme and Bills Wells recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946.
